MUSICAL EXPECTANCY, FORMAL FUNCTIONS, AND STYLE: THE INTERACTION OF STRUCTURAL CONVENTIONS AND DEVIATIONS AT THE DAWN OF THE ROMANTIC PERIOD
Yürütücü - Diğer (Uluslararası) - Tamamlandı The proposed project is based on the assumption that the emotional properties of a style arise from the interaction of structural conventions and deviations observed in the musical works of this style the style of a period or composer may be defined by determining the basic structural principles and their effect on the listener’s musical experience. Hence, the birth of a new style is triggered by the reflection of some paradigmatic structural changes on listener’s musical experience. Therefore, a new style arises when the new structural relations begin to supersede the old ones and when the listener’s expectations begin to be reshaped according to this change. The project aims to track the roots of the Romantic style according these assumptions. The project is planned to consist of three main parts. In the first part, works selected from the first three decades of the 19th century styles will be analyzed according to Caplin’s formal functions theory. The second part is reserved for the consideration of Caplin’s formal function theory and the outcomes of the previous analyses by musical expectancy theories. The third part will consist of the semiotic analysis of the same repertory and its assessment. , 01.08.2017 |
